! HOT PENNIES !

12:00 NOON BOXING DAY

Join us for this centuries old tradition.  In years gone by the gentry of the town, and later the ladies of the local hunt, would hurl scalding hot pennies, heated in the ovens of the Bulkeley Hotel kitchens, to the crowds below. Click here for a Pathe news reel clip of the 1938 event.

Nowadays the pennies are more gently warmed and it is the Town Mayor and Mayoress who do the scattering from the balcony on the front of the Bulkeley Hotel in Castle Street.
